Ali Mehdi

Dr Ali Mehdi is a Senior Fellow at ICRIER. He established the ‘Health Policy Initiative’ (HPI) at the institute in 2014 and has been leading it since.

He has more than 12 years of research experience on a broad range of health issues – child survival, preventive health, chronic diseases, drug regulation, antimicrobial resistance, social determinants of health, inequities, surveillance, financing, governance, manpower, etc. In addition, he has also worked on job-related issues as part of World Bank-ICRIER project on ‘Jobs and Development’, which he also happened to establish – early skills and human capital formation and challenges of job creation in fragile situations. Ali was also part of the G20’s T20 Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the German Presidency in 2017.

As part of HPI, Ali has successfully engaged with various influential stakeholders – from central- and state-level policymakers to international organizations, industry, civil society and academia – and has collaborated / conducted field research in several Indian states (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana / Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir) as well as developed and developing countries (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore, China, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, South Africa), making our research representative and capable of drawing actionable policy lessons from a wide variety of contexts. The philosophy behind such engagement has been to consider the challenges, concerns and standpoints of various stakeholders so that they can be reflected in our research and enable us to be independent in our analysis and policy recommendations.

He has published papers, book chapters, books and columns as well as spoken on these themes in national and international meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences. Among his upcoming books are – ‘A shot of justice: Priority-setting for addressing child mortality’ (Oxford University Press 2018), ‘Freedoms, fragility and job creation: Perspectives from Jammu and Kashmir, India’ (Springer 2018) and ‘Health of the Nation: India Health Report’ (Oxford University Press 2019).

Ali completed his Masters living in the footsteps of the Black Forest at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, and PhD at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany with a full scholarship under the Excellence Initiative of the German government.
